NSGEU members at Laing House vote to strike

NSGEU/NUPGE members at Laing House want a fair settlement for the people they serve, and themselves.

Halifax (16 May 2017) — After 2 days of conciliation in early May, the employer presented its final offer to the bargaining committee at Laing House, representing members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE). The bargaining committee presented the final offer to the members without making a recommendation of acceptance or rejection. Members reviewed the final offer and conducted their vote between April 28 and May 12, voting to either accept the employer’s final offer or reject the offer and give authorization to conduct a strike.

Strike Vote Results

NSGEU/NUPGE members voted strongly in favour of a strike to back their bargaining committee’s demands after the conclusion of conciliation.

Eighty per cent of the membership voted, and 100 per cent of the members who cast ballots indicated they require fairness to reach a collective agreement. The NSGEU/NUPGE has requested the conciliator file his report. Once the conciliator has provided notice that the report has been filed, the 14-day strike countdown will begin.

Members want fairness for the people they serve, and themselves

NSGEU/NUPGE members work to empower youth living with mental illness through innovative youth engagement and peer support. This vote is about fairness and respect not only for NSGEU/NUPGE members but for the people they serve.

Details on how fellow NSGEU/NUPGE members can show support will be provided in the coming days. Together, the NSGEU/NUPGE makes fairness work for everyone!
